Black mangroves now fill what is thought to be the remnants of a Calusa Indian ceremonial water court in the middle of  Mound Key. The island in Estero Bay was once the capital of the Calusa empire from 2000 years ago until European conquerors and disease wiped out the lost culture that thrived hunting and fishing in the estuaries of Southwest Florida.
